Project Bioshield to Deliver Smallpox Vaccinations to Special Populations
Over more than a million doses against smallpox has been given across the nation under the Project BioShield domains, says a source. This is a contract with Bavarian Nordic that manufactures the doses and delivers to millions across the globe to prevent the next generation from contracting the virus. Each year it is said that the company delivers around 20 million doses to keep the next generation safe around and this would be an initiative which would continue until the year 2013, says a source. It is BARDA that took charge of administering the contract with Bavarian Nordic and they are directly answerable to the esteemed Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, says a source.
If there is an emergency of high levels, such as an act of terrorism to wipe out humanity using such viruses, sources say that the vaccines would be used for those whose immunity systems aren't too strong. This would be especially for those who are HIV infected and have yet to move onto the stages where AIDS would set in. even the esteemed Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) advises the same and has issued out mandates to the public at large, says a source.
SNS or the Strategic National Stockpile which is taken care of by the CDC or the well known Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that large amounts of medical supplies and medicines have been stored for emergency needs. This is important to the American citizens since if there is an outbreak or an attack of terrorism where the flu would spread rapidly, the local supply of medicines shouldn't be wiped out. When the local and the federal honchos agree that such a provision by the SNS is needed, the medicines would then be accessible and easy to reach, even if it has to be delivered it wouldn't take more than 12 hours for the same, irrespective of where in the US the need is, says a source.
BARDA obtained the contract from Project BioShield for the research and development of the medicines and medical countermeasures. This would be an armed force development against bio, chemical or even nuclear attacks that would threaten humanity at large, says a source. Four years ago, in 2007, Bavarian Nordic got the contract to research and develops MVA smallpox vaccines and to send them to SNS, says a source. According to various sources, such a contract was first of its kind where milestones payments were involved and taken care of by the esteemed PAHPA as well.
Now BARDA would want to support the company by working with them on finding ways to bring around frozen versions of the medication which would bring around more shelf life for the vaccine and at cost effective methods that too. The next report scheduled anytime soon to be out would bring more news on the vaccines progress to help save the next generation, till then we shall wait and watch, says a source!!
